What causes smelly armpits?

You might be thinking that you already know the cause of underarm odor: SWEAT; but the truth is that sweat itself does not have a smell. The bacteria that is attracted to the places where you are sweating the most causes of your smelly underarm such as your feet and underarms. Similar to how your feet would get the smell.

To understand the causes of your smelly underarms, first you have to understand how your body sweats. Your body contains two types of sweat glands: Eccrine glands and Apocrine glands

Eccrine glands open directly to the surface of your skin. For instance, when your palms sweat the perspiration comes from the eccrine glands.

Apocrine glands open to your hair follicles, secreting thicker sweat that is usually connected to the underarm. Apocrine glands tend to be in places that are warm and confined in your body. These glands can be the breeding ground for bacteria that causes the bad odor.
